The way people cling to the belief that a full-filled, pain-free life equals happiness act
ually diminishes their chances of ever attaining real happiness. If fun and pleasure are equated with happiness, then pain must be equated with unhappiness. But, in fact, the opposite is true: more times than not, things that lead to happiness involve some pain.

As a result, many people avoid the very endeavors that are the source of true happiness. They fear the pain inevitably brought by such things as marriage, raising children, professional achievement, religious commitment, civic or charitable work, self-improvement.

Ask a bachelor why he resists marriage even though he finds dating to be less and less satisfying. If he's honest, he will tell you that he is afraid of making a commitment. For commitment is in fact quite painful. The single life is filled with fun, adventure, excitement. Marriage has such moments, but they are not its most distinguishing features.

Similarly, couples who choose not to have children are deciding in favor of painless fun over painful happiness. They can dine out whenever they feel like and sleep as late as they wish. Couples with infant children are lucky to get a whole night's sleep or a three-day vacation. I don't know any parent who would choose the word fun to describe raising children.

Understanding and accepting that true happiness has nothing to do with fun is one of the most liberating realizations we ever come to. It liberates time: now we can devote more hours to activities that can genuinely increase our happiness. It liberates money: buy that new car or those fancy clothes that will do nothing to increase our happiness now seems pointless. And it liberates us from envy: we now understand that all those rich and glamorous people we were so sure are happy because they are always having so much fun actually may not be happy at all. The moment we understand that fun does not bring happiness, we begin to live differently. The effect can be, quite literally, life-transforming.

According to the writer, people who think of happiness as fun ______.

A.are somewhat denied the chances of gaining happiness

B.will remain single although they may go dating

C.must know what true happiness is

D.should devote more time to activities

assigned to our new branch office?

听力原文:W: Hi, Sam, I hate to bother you but I wonder if I could have a word with you?

M: Sounds so serious. What's up?

W: Well, the landlord just informed me that he's going to increase our rent by two hundred. I'm wondering how you feel about it.

M: How do I feel about it? No way! In our tenancy agreement, it says he will have to give us a notice three months in advance if he wants to increase the rent.

W: Yeah, that's right! It's gotta be three months later. Well, I think he realizes his rental fee is below the market rate and he must be feeling a bit ripped off when he could be charging a couple hundred extra. What do you think Sam? Should we agree to the raise or find somewhere else?

M: Good question. I'm not sure either. The location we're at now is quite convenient. Close to the grocery and near the subway. It'll be hard to find another location like this one.

W: I wonder whether he'll allow room for negotiation. Perhaps a hundred dollars instead of two. Maybe he might be more willing to give a bit if we speak to him right way.

M: Well, he seems to be a nice guy to talk to. But what if he refuses? Would you go for two then?

W: Well, I guess I would, since it'll be hard to find such a convenient location. Besides, it's close to my school and I can sleep a little later in the mornings.

M: Ha! I figured that's what you'd be concerned about. Well, I have to give it some serious thought. I'm not sure I can afford to cough up an extra hundred a month just to make sure I can sleep in an extra 15 minutes.

W: Didn't you get your loan recently? That'll cover what you need. Besides, if you could just stop spending so much on cafeteria snacks you'd have lots of money to spare.

M: Yeah, but I'm thinking of getting a new laptop.

W: Well, I tell you, there aren't a lot of apartments that are cheaper, even with this new increase.

M: I know, so when does he want us to come back on this?

W: He told me to let him know this weekend.

M: Sure, by then I should be able to make up my mind.

(20)

A.Where they should move.

B.How to negotiate with the landlord.

C.How to fight the increase.

D.Whether to accept an increase in rent or move.

Caring For the Elderly

Caring for the elderly is not an easy task, and there are no hard and fast rules on how it should be done. Here are some tips you can apply to make life easier and happier for both yourself and the elderly person in your care.

Establish a Routine.

Organize the performance of daily activities in a routine manner, so that they are performed in the same way and at the same time every day. This routine will establish a sense of structure and increase feelings of control and safety. However, this routine can be broken with unplanned events occasionally, as elderly people may find the routine structure too boring and restrictive.

Get to Know Them.

It is important that you get to know the elderly in your care, their daily habits, likes and dislikes, etc. The better you know the person, the higher quality of care you can provide.

Treat Them with Respect.

If elderly people do not have your respect, they will feel like they are being pushed around or asked to do things that they don't want to. This can lead to a bad relationship. By treating elderly persons in your care with respect, you can develop a strong bond with them. Besides, you can talk to them like adults, show your love and respect, which will not only make them feel good, but may also gain you their respect in return.

Mental Stimulation.

It is better to try to keep them occupied with challenging games, like crosswords or chess, which will keep their minds sharp. They like to discuss world events and their life histories with you. This will give the elderly people a feeling of self-worth and make them feel needed.

Social Interaction.

Organize and encourage social interaction. Remaining connected to other people and the world is important for the elderly. It helps the elderly feel more engaged. Encourage them to talk to other residents or participate in games, discussions or day trips. Help them to develop a strong relationship with a neighbor. It is important for the elderly to talk to others and make friends.

1. The elderly people will always obey the routine structure.()

2. We need to know the elderly people more to provide them with better care.()

3. We needn’t respect the elderly people when caring them.()

4. Discussion can’t make the elderly people feel needed.()

5. It is necessary for the elderly people to make friends.()

A: Very well, we have settled everything about this transaction, except the terms of payment.

B: As you know, we prefer the L/C 20 days in advance which expires 15 days after receiving the paking list.

A: I suppose you have known our financial standing and credit well now after our long-term cooperation. We know an irrevocable L/C can ensure that the seller gets payment duly. But, on the other hand, it would increase the buying cost. Therefore, could you consider giving us D/P this time?

B: I am sorry. But our rules only allow us to accept other terms of payment by L/C, although the buyer has had two or three transactions with us before.

A: But why not if you have known the buyer's credit after several deals?

B: We hope you can understand. We have got some serious lessons from the credulity. One of them was through D/P documentary collection. When the shipment worth US $50000 was effected, the buyer refused to make the payment. But we can do nothing with it.And that buyer had had one or two deals before this one.

A: I see.But the flexible terms of payment will definitely bring you more orders as well as facilitate the buyers' purchasing.

B: Sure.We don't mean we won't accept other terms of payment forever. As a matter of fact, we will do so when we have known well about the buyer's credit after a real long-term cooperation.

Advertising can be thought of “as the means of making known in order to buy or sell go
ods or services”.Advertising aims to increase people’s awareness and arouse interest. It tries to inform. and to persuade. The media are all used to spread the message, and the press offers a fairly cheap method.Magazines are used to reach special sections of the market. The cinema and commercial radio are useful for local markets.Television, although more expensive, can be very effective.Posters are fairly cheap and more permanent in their power of attraction.Other ways of increasing consumer interest are through exhibitions and trade fairs as well as direct mail advertising.

We might ask whether the cost of advertising is paid for by the manufacturer or by the consumer.Since advertising forms part of the cost of production, which has to be covered by the selling price, it is clear that it is the customer who pays for advertising. However, if large scale advertising leads to increased demand, production costs are reduced, and the customer pays less.

It is difficult to measure exactly the influence of advertising on sales. When the market is growing, advertising helps to increase demand. When the market is shrinking, advertising may prevent a bigger fall in scales than would occur without its support. What is clear is that businesses would not pay large sums for advertising if they were not convinced of its value to them.

Over eight months the scientists tested 20 drugs, all with negative results. Finall
y they tested the anticonvulsant drug ethosuzimide. Researchers found that the drug extended the life span of roundworms from 16. 7 days to 19. 6 days, a 17 percent increase。

A. But Komfeld said scientists will not know about the applicability of the drugs in humans until a similar study is done on humans. “What’s very encouraging is that these drugs were developed to treat humans, and they are well understood, because they’ve been used for a long time, ” he said。

B. Later the scientists discovered that two related anticonvulsant drugs also lengthened the lives of the worms-in the case of one drug, by almost 50 percent. “This was a big surprise to use, Komfeld said. ”“We didn’t think anticonvulsant drugs had any particular relationship to aging. That connection was completely unexpected. ”

C. Roundworms are a poor subject for experiments, because they are not like humans, even though their molecules are similar. For example, they have no bones, nor do they show emotions, making it difficult to know how exactly human subjects would react to these drugs in large quantities. However, using the worms allows experiments to be conducted quickly, because they do not live for long。

D. “Somehow the neural activity seems to regulate the aging of all of the body the skin, musculature, and reproductive tract, ” Kornfeld said. “Somehow the nervous system coordinates the progress of all these tissues, evidently, though the life stages. But we don’t know how it does that. ”

E. The discovery may also shed light on the little-understood aging process. Since the drugs act on the neuromuscular systems of both humans and worms, the findings hint at a link between neural activity and aging。

F. Unlike vertebrates, the worms are ideal subjects for the study of aging because of their short life spans, which last only a couple of weeks in a laboratory. The worm is well known in genetics, and the worm’s genome has been sequenced。

G. Use of this drug has been permitted by law since 1998 and wider use is now expected as a result of the studies. “We can clearly link this drug with human aging, but we still need to find proof, says Kornfeld optimistically. ”

What do we talk about when we talk about money? We often think about what we can buy with
the money we have, what we can’t buy because we don’t have enough and what we’re planning to buy when we have more. We discuss the careers that bring us money and the expenses that take it away. We talk about our favourite shops and restaurants, the causes we support, the places we’ve been and seen. We share dreams that only money can make real.

In short, we talk about everything but money itself. In daily life, money is still a major conversational taboo. This is a shame, because money is as interesting as the things it does and buys, and the more you know about it, the more interesting it is.

As a financial advisor, I’ve seen hundreds of people learn to control their money instead of letting it control them and watched as they increased as they increased their freedom, power and security by handling money consciously. Wouldn’t you like to know that you’ll always have enough money to live exactly as you want to?
