三、阅读理解参考答案见试卷末尾

1、There are two methods of fighting, the one by law, the other by force; the first method is that of men, the second of beasts; but as the first method is often insufficient, one must have recourse to(求助,求援)the second. It is, therefore, necessary for a prince to know well how to use both the beast and the man. This was covertly(隐秘地,不公开地)taught to rulers by ancient writers, who relate how Achilles and many others of those ancient princes were given to Chiron the centaur(半人半马的怪物)to be brought up and educated under his discipline. The parable(寓言)of this semi-animal, semi-human teacher is meant to indicate that the one without the other is not durable. A prince, being thus obliged to know well how to act as a beast, must imitate the fox, and the lion, for the lion cannot protect himself from traps, and the fox cannot defend himself from wolves. Those that wish to be only lions do not understand this. Therefore, a prudent(谨慎的)ruler ought not to keep faith when by doing so it would be against his interest, and when the reasons which made him bind himself no longer exist. If men were all good, this precept(规则)would not be a good one; but as they are bad, and would not keep faith with them. Nor have legitimate grounds ever failed a prince who wished to show colorable excuse for the nonfulfilment of his promise. Of this, one could furnish an infinite number of examples, and show how many times peace has been broken, and how many promises rendered(致使)worthless, by the faithlessness of princes, and those that have best been a-ble to imitate the fox have succeeded best. But it is necessary to be able to disguise this character well, and to be a great feigner(作假者)and dissembler(伪君子),and men are so simple and so ready to obey present necessities that the one who deceives will always be able to find those who allow themselves to be deceived.

5、What's the best way for you, as an employer, to deliver bad news to an employee? First of all, you have to break the news yourself, face to face with the recipient(接受者). You can't write memos to tell people they will not get raises this year or that they have made an error or are not performing as well as expected. You have to show them how you feel about the matter and that you are personally sorry and sympathize with them. If you indicate that you are ready to listen to their reactions to your bad news, you will undoubtedly save yourself from their wrath. Above all, you must be ready for an emotional reaction from the recipient of bad news. Give people time to digest your news and to control the emotion they invariably feel. Although it is never easy to break bad news, if you follow these steps, you will at least soften the blow.

8、New York E-commerce has revolutionized the business world and won't disappear despite investors pulling the plug on many dot-coms, says Marcia H. Flicker, Ph. D. , a Ford-ham University marketing professor. Venture capitalists are disgusted , with the lack of rectums, she says, " The uncertainty went too far to the investment side in 1998 and 1999, and now it's gone too far the other way investors are so conservative that they are reluctant to invest even in sustainable businesses. Flicker says pure Internet-based companies will have limited success. However, click and mortar sites—those that are affiliated with a store and have catalogs in addition to a web address will thrive. This strategy, employed by companies such as Pottery Barman Bam and Eddie Bauer, is working well, she says. Flicker predicts that web services will start charging fees now that revenues from banner ads are waning. The fee structures will allow some users to pay a higher price to avoid unsolicited advertising. Flicker presented these and other ideas at the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business(AACSB)International 2001 E-Commerce Conference last month. Forehand's Graduate School of Business Administration was established in 1969. Its part-time MBA program is ranked 12th by U. S. News & World Report. The College of Business Administration, founded in 1920, is ranked among the "best buys" in undergraduate education by U. S. News & World Report. Founded in 1841, Ford ham is New York City's Jesuit University.
