二、阅读理解参考答案见试卷末尾
1、It is not often realized that women held a high place in southern European societies in the 10th and 11th centuries. As a wife, the woman was protected by the setting up of a dowry (嫁妆). Admittedly, the purpose of this was to protect her against the risk of desertion, but in reality its function in the social and family life of the time was much more important. The dowry was the wife’s right to receive a tenth of all her husband’s property. The wife had the right to with hold consent, in all transactions the husband would make, and more than just a right; the documents show that she enjoyed a real power of decision, equal to that of her husband. In no case do the documents indicate any degree of difference in the legal status of husband and wife. The wife shared in the management of her husband’s personal property, but the opposite was not always true. Women seemed perfectly prepared to defend their own inheritance against husbands who tried to exceed their rights, and on occasion they showed a fine fighting spirit. A case in point is that of Maria Vivas. Having agreed with her husband Miro to sell a field she had inherited, for the needs of the household, she insisted on compensation. None being offered, she succeeded in dragging her husband to the scribe to have a contract duly drawn up assigning her a piece of land from Miro’s personal inheritance. The unfortunate husband was obliged to agree, as the contract says, for the sake of peace. Either through the dowry or through being hot-tempered, the wife knew how to win herself, with the context of the family, a powerful economic position
Originally, the purpose of a dowry is to ______()
A.give a woman the right to receive all her husband’s property
B.help a woman to enjoy a higher position in the family
C.protect a woman against the risk of desertion
D.both A and C
2、According to the passage, the legal status of the wife in marriage was ______()
A.higher than that of a single woman
B.higher than that of her husband
C.lower than that of her husband
D.the same as that of her husband
3、Why does the author give us the example of Maria Vivas()
A.To show that the wife shared in the management of her husband’s personal property
B.To show that the wife can defend her own inheritance
C.To prove that women have powerful position
D.To illustrate how women win her property
4、The compensation Maria Vivas got for the field is ______()
A.some of the land Miro had inherited
B.a tenth of Miro’s land
C.money for household expenses
D.money form Miro’s inheritance
5、The author’s attitude towards Maria Vivas is ______()
A.sympathetic
B.disapproval
C.indifferent

6、Engineering students are supposed to be examples of practicality and rationality, but when it comes to my college education I am an idealist and a fool. In high school I wanted to be an electrical engineer and, of course, any sensible student with my aims would have chosen a college with a large engineering department, famous reputation and lots of good labs and research equipment. But that’s not what I did.I chose to study engineering at a small liberal arts (文科) university that doesn’t even offer a major in electrical engineering. Obviously, this was not a practical choice; I came here for more noble reasons. I wanted a broad education that would provide me with flexibility and a value system to guide me in my career. I wanted to open my eyes and expand my vision by interacting with people who weren’t studying science or engineering. My parents, teachers and other adults praised me for such a sensible choice. They told me I was wise and mature beyond my 18 years, and I believed them.I headed off to college sure I was going to have an advantage over those students who went to big engineering factories where they didn’t care if you had values or were flexible. I was going to be a complete engineer: technical genius and sensitive humanist (人文学者) all in one.Now I’m not so sure. Somewhere along the way my noble ideals crashed into reality, as all noble ideals eventually do. After three years of struggling to balance math, physics and engineering courses with liberal arts courses, I have learned there are reasons why few engineering students try to reconcile (协调) engineering with liberal arts courses in college. The reality that has blocked my path to become the typical successful student is that engineering and the liberal arts simply don’t mix as easily as I assumed in high school. Individually they shape a person in very different ways; together they threaten to confuse. The struggle to reconcile the two fields of study is difficult
The author chose to study engineering at a small liberal arts university because he ______()

B.become noble idealists
C.receive guidance in their careers
D.balance engineering and the liberal arts
8、In the eyes of the author, a successful engineering student is expected ______()
A.to be imaginative with a value system to guide him
B.to be a technical genius with a wide vision
C.to have an excellent academic record
D.to be wise and mature
9、The author’s experience shows that he was ______()

C.ambitious
D.unrealistic
10、The word they in …together they threaten to confuse. (Line 3, Para. 5) refers to ______()
A.practicality and rationality
B.engineering and the liberal arts
C.reality and noble ideals
D.flexibility and a value system
11、If we were asked exactly what we were doing a year ago, we should probably have to say that we could not remember. But if we had kept a book and had written in it an account of what we did each day, we should be able to give an answer to the question. It is the same in history. Many things have been forgotten because we do not have any written account of them. Sometimes men did keep a record of the most important happenings in their country, but often it was destroyed by fire or in a war. Sometimes there was never any written record at all because the people of that time and place did not know how to write. For example, we know a good deal about the people who lived in China 4,000 years ago, because they could write and leave written records for those who lived after them. But we know almost nothing about the people who lived even 200 years ago in Central Africa, because they had not learned to write. Sometimes, of course, even if the people cannot write, they may know something of the past. They have heard about it from older people, and often songs and dances and stories have been made about the most important happenings, and these have been sung and acted and told for many generations. For most people they are proud to tell what their fathers did in the past. This we may call remembered history. Some of it has now been written down. It is not so exact or so valuable to us as written history is, because words are much more easily changed when used again and again in speech than when copied in writing. But where there are no written records, such spoken stories are often very helpful
Which of the following ideas is NOT suggested in the passage()
A.Remembered history, compared with written history, is less reliable
B.Written records of the past play the most important role in our learning of the human history
C.A written account of our daily activities helps us to be able to answer many questions
D.Where there are no written records, there is no history
12、We know very little about the central Africa 200 years ago because ______()
A.there was nothing worth being written down at that time
B.the people there ignored the importance of keeping a record
C.the written records were perhaps destroyed by a fire
D.the people there did not know how to write
13、Remembered historyrefers to ______()
A.history based on a person’s imagination
B.stories of important happenings passed down from mouth to mouth
C.songs and dances about the most important events
D.both B and C
14、Remembered historyis regarded as valuable only when ______()
A.it is written down
B.no written account is available
C.it proves to be true
D.people are interested in it
15、The passage suggests that we could have learned much more about our past than we do now if the ancient people had ______()
A.kept a written record of every past event
B.not burnt their written records in wars
C.told exact stories of the most important happenings
D.made more songs and dances
16、I’ve changed my mind. I wanted to have a telescope, but now I want my daddy back. Lucien Lawrence’s letter to Father Christmas written after his father had been knifed to death outside his school gate, must have touched every heart. Lucien went on to say that without his father he couldn’t see the stars in the sky. When those whom we love depart from us, we cannot see the stars for a while. But Lucien, the stars are still there, and one day, when you are older and your tears have gone, you will see them again. And, in a strange way, I expect that you will find your father is there too, in your mind and in your heart. I find that my parents, long dead now, still figure in many of my dreams and that I think of them perhaps more than I ever did when they were alive. I still live to please them and I’m still surprised by their reactions. I remember that when I became a professor, I was so proud, or rather so pleased with myself, that I couldn’t wait to cable my parents. The reply was a long time in coming, but when it did, all Mother said was I hope this means that now you will have more time for the children! I haven’t forgotten. The values of my parents still live on. It makes me pause and think about how I will live on in the hearts and minds of my children and of those for whom I care. Would I have been as ready as Philip Lawrence have been to face the aggressors(挑衅者), and to lay down my life for those in my care? How many people would want me back for Christmas? It’s a serious thought, one to give me pause. I pray silently, sometimes, in the dead of night, that ancient cry of a poet Deliver my soul from the sword(剑),and my darling from the power of the dog. Yet I know the death comes to us all, and sometimes comes suddenly. We must therefore plan to live forever, but live as if we will die tomorrow. We live on, I’m sure, in the lives of those we loved, and therefore we ought to have a care for what they will remember and what they will treasure. If more parents knew this in their hearts to be true, there might be fewer knives on our streets today

21、Batteries can power anything from small sensors to large systems. While scientists are finding ways to make them smaller but even more powerful, problems can arise when these batteries are much larger and heavier than the devices themselves. University of Missouri(MU) researchers are developing a nuclear energy source that is smaller, lighter and more efficient. To provide enough power, we need certain methods with high energy density(密度),said Jae Kwon, assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering at MU. The radioisotope(放射性同位素) battery can provide power density that is much higher than chemical batteries.Kwon and his research team have been working on building a small nuclear battery, presently the size and thickness of a penny, intended to power various micro / nanoelectromechanical systems (M/NEMS). Although nuclear batteries can cause concerns, Kwon said they are safe.People hear the word ‘nuclear’ and think of something very dangerous, he said. However, nuclear power sources have already been safely powering a variety of devices, such as pace-makers, space satellites and underwater systems. His new idea is not only in the battery’s size, but also in its semiconductor(半导体). Kwon’s battery uses a liquid semiconductor rather than a solid semiconductor. The key part of using a radioactive battery is that when you harvest the energy, part of the radiation energy can damage the lattice structure(晶体结构) of the solid semiconductor, Kwon said, By using a liquid semiconductor, we believe we can minimize that problem.Together with J. David Robertson, chemistry professor and associate director of the MU Research Reactor, Kwon is working to build and test the battery. In the future, they hope to increase the battery’s power, shrink its size and try with various other materials. Kwon said that the battery could be thinner than the thickness of human hair
