1、Sometimes, people simply do not realize they are being ill mannered. Take Ted, for example. He prides himself on speaking his mind, and has something to say on everything. But his frankness is often extremely embarrassing.
He is incapable of saying, I thought that last advertising campaign had a lot of good ideas in it, but perhaps next time we could give the copy more vitality(活力). Instead, he would say, That campaign was a disaster. A child of three could have done better!
The fact that he is often right does not help. Other employees dislike his manner even more, but he is too sensitive to notice.
Another character among the list of ill-mannered employees is Sally, who seems to regard just being at work as a severe punishment. Everything is done unwillingly. Asking her to do a task beyond her basic job description is often not worth the trouble. It will be done, but only half-heartedly.
Fergus is just the opposite. He shows an over-familiarity to his boss. When an important visitor is shown into the manager’s office, Fergus cannot take the hint and leave. Instead he will attempt to take part in the conversation, declaring, You can talk in front of me. Henry and I don’t have many secrets, do we? Over the years Fergus has fallen behind his former equals. But he seeks to maintain the same close relationship that he imagines existed in their younger days
Which of the following words describes Ted best()
A.Cold
B.Tactless
C.Stupid
D.Warmhearted
2、It can be inferred from the passage that Ted ______()
A.is wellknown for his honesty
B.tends to blame others rather than himself
C.often gives the right idea in the wrong way
D.is treated unfairly by the management
3、Which of the following is true about Sally()
A.She thinks it’s unfair to have so much work to do
B.She is unhappy to help others
C.She hates being ordered about
D.She does everything half-heartedly
4、From the passage, we can infer that Fergus ______()
A.was once close to all his colleagues
B.has remained in the same position for years
C.doesn’t know what a hint is
D.knows everything that happens in the office
5、The writer is taking the point of view of ______()
A.a colleague
B.people like Ted
C.an employee
D.a manager
6、Faces, like fingerprints, are unique. Did you ever wonder how it is possible for us to recognize people? Even a skilled writer probably could not describe all the features that make one face different from another. Yet a very young child—or even an animal, such as a pigeon—can learn to recognize faces, we all take this ability for granted.
We also tell people apart by how they behave. When we talk about someone’s personality, we mean the ways in which he or she acts, speaks, thinks and feels that make that individual different from others.
Like the human face, human personality is very complex. But describing someone’s personality in words is somewhat easier than describing his face. If you were asked to describe what a nice face looked like, you probably would have a difficult time doing so. But if you were asked to describe a nice person, you might begin to think about someone who was kind, considerate, friendly, warm, and so forth.
There are many words to describe how a person thinks, feels, acts. Gordon Allport, an American psychologist, found nearly 18,000 English words characterizing differences in people’s behavior. And many of us use this information as a basis for describing, or typing his personality. Bookworms, conservatives, military types—people are described with such terms.
People have always tried to type each other. Actors in early Greek drama wore masks to show the audience whether they played the villain’s (坏人) or the hero’s role. In fact, the words person and personality come from the Latin persona, meaning mask. Today, most television and movie actors do not wear masks. But we can easily tell the good guy from the bad guy because the two types differ in appearances as well as in actions
By using the example of fingerprints, the author tells us that ______()
A.people can learn to recognize faces
B.people have different personalities
C.people have difficulty in describing the features of fingerprints
D.people differ from each other in facial features
7、According to this passage, some animals have the gift of ______()

C.telling good people from bad people
D.recognizing human faces
8、Who most probably knows best how to describe people’s personality()
A.The ancient Greek audience
B.The movie actors
C.Psychologists
D.The modern TV audience
9、According to the passage, it is possible for us to tell one type of person from another because ______()
A.people differ in their behavioral and physical characteristics
B.human fingerprints provide unique information
C.people’s behavior can be easily described in words
D.human faces have complex features
10、Which of the following is the major point of the passage()
A.Why it is necessary to identify people’s personality?
B.Why it is possible to describe people?
C.How to get to know people?
D.How best to recognize people
11、Family is of course an elastic word. But when British people say that their society is based on family life, they are thinking of family in its narrow, peculiarly European sense of mother, father and children living together alone in their own house as an economic and social unit. Thus, every British marriage indicates the beginning of a new and independent family—hence the tremendous importance of marriage in British life.
For both the man and the woman, marriage means leaving one’s parents and starting one’s own life. The man’s first duty will then be to his wife, and the wife’s to her husband. He will be entirely responsible for her financial support, and she for the running of the new home. Their children will be their common responsibility and theirs alone. Neither the wife’s parents nor the husband’s, nor their brothers or sisters, aunts or uncles, have any right to interfere with them—they are their own masters.
Readers of novels like Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice will know that in former times marriage among wealthy families was arranged by the girl’s parents, that is, it was the parents’ duty to find a suitable husband for their daughter, preferably a rich one, and by skillful encouragement to lead him eventually to ask their permission to marry her. Until that time, the girl was protected and maintained in the parents’ home, and the financial relief of getting rid of her could be seen in their giving the newly married pair a sum of money called a dowry(嫁妆). It is very different today. Most girls of today get a job when they leave school and become financially independent before their marriage. This has had two results: a girl chooses her own husband, and she gets no dowry
What does the author mean by ‘Family’ is of course an elastic word()
A.Different families have different ways of life
B.Different definitions could be given to the word
C.Different nations have different families
D.Different times produce different families

16、We don’t have beds in the spacecraft, but we do have sleeping bags. During the day, when we are working, we leave the bags tied to the wall, out of the way. At bedtime we untie them and take them wherever we’ve chosen to sleep.
On most spacecraft flights everyone sleeps at the same time. No one has to stay awake to watch over the spacecraft; the craft’s computers call us on the radio.
On the spacecraft, sleep-time doesn’t mean nighttime. During each ninety-minute orbit(轨道) the sun rises and shines through our windows for about fifty minutes, then it sets as the spacecraft takes us around the dark side of the Earth. To keep the sun out of our eyes, we wear black sleep masks.
It is surprisingly easy to get comfortable and fall asleep in space. Every astronaut(宇航员) sleeps differently: some sleep upside down, some sideways, and some right side up. When it’s time to sleep, I take my bag, my sleep mask and my tape player with earphones and float(漂浮) up to the flight deck(驾驶舱). Then I get into the bag, and float in a sitting position just above a seat, right next to a window. Before I pull the mask down over my eyes, I relax for a while, listening to music and watching the Earth go by under me
When the astronauts are working, sleeping bags are fastened ______()
A.on the wall
B.to their seats
C.onto the flight deck
D.anywhere they like
17、Why can all the astronauts sleep at the same time()
A.They have to follow the same timetable

C.There are enough sleeping bags in the spacecraft
D.There is no need for them to watch over the spacecraft
18、To relax himself before sleep, the writer often ______()

C.listens to music
D.wears a sleep mask

C.Ninety minutes
D.Twentyfour hours
