二、阅读理解参考答案见试卷末尾
1、A major incentive (动力) for college attendance is the belief that it will prepare you for a career. Chances are that the career you want, whether in nursing, counseling, law, or management, requires a college education. Even if the return of your education isn’t as great as it used to be, you would probably rather be a relatively poorly paid lawyer than a secretary or a construction worker; you would probably rather be a manager than a managee. In the sense that a degree is increasingly required for even middle-level jobs, your investment in a college education will still pay off.
It can pay off in other ways too. It is a value judgement to say that a college education will make you a better person, but it is a value judgement that the vast majority of college graduates are willing to make survey after survey to demonstrate that people feel very positive about their college education, believing that it has made them better and more tolerant people.
Whether it makes you a better person or not, a college education is likely to have a lasting effect on your knowledge and values. If you finish college, you will sit through 30 to 45 different courses. Even the least dedicated student is bound to learn something from these courses. In addition, students learn informally. Whether you go to college in you hometown or across the country, college will introduce you to a greater diversity of people than you’re likely to have experienced before. This diversity will challenge your mind and broaden your horizons.
As a result of formal and informal learning, college graduates are more knowledgeable about the world around them, more tolerant and less prejudiced, more active in public and community affairs, and, more open to new ideas
It is apparent from the passage that people go to college mainly because they believe ______()
A.a college education will provide them with a guarantee of success in life
B.the economy of their country can’t absorb an army of untrained youngsters
C.a college education will make them better qualified for a career
D.the investment in a college education can bring a higher economic return than before
2、We can learn from the second paragraph that ______()
A.college can hardly help people become better citizens
B.most college graduates refuse to make any comment on their college education
C.a college education may not be the best thing for everyone
D.people consider their college education to be of great worth
3、The word dedicated(Para. 3) could best be replaced by ______()
A.hardworking
B.competent
C.intelligent
D.conservative
4、According to the passage, which of the following statements is NOT true()
A.A college student can enrich his knowledge and broaden his mind through formal and informal learning
B.A college education is likely to be a required credential (文凭) for the career a person wants
C.A college student who doesn’t work hard can get nothing out of the courses he takes
D.A college education tends to have longrange effects on a person’s knowledge and values
5、This passage is primarily concerned with ______()
A.the change of people’s attitude toward their college education
B.the benefits of a college education
C.the result of formal and informal learning
D.the intercommunication among college students
6、I suppose that the most basic and powerful way to connect to another person is to listen. Just listen. Perhaps the most important thing we ever give each other is our attention, and especially if it’s given from the heart. When people are talking, there’s no need to do anything but receive them. Listen to what they’re saying. Care about it. Most times caring about it is even more important than understanding it. Most of us don’t value ourselves or our love enough to know this. It has taken me a long time to believe in the power of simple saying I’m so sorry. when someone is in pain.
One of my patients told me that when she tried to tell her story people often interrupted to tell her that they once had something just like that happening to her. Subtly, her pain became a story about them. Eventually she stopped talking to most people. We connect through listening. When we interrupt what someone is saying to let them know that we understand, we move the focus of attention to ourselves. When we listen, they know we care.
I have ever learned to respond to someone crying by just listening. In the old days I used to reach for the handkerchiefs, until I realized that passing a person a handkerchief may be just another way to shut him down, to take them out of their experience of sadness. Now I just listen. When they have cried all they need to cry, they find me there with them.
This simple thing has not been that easy to learn. It certainly went against everything I had been taught since I was very young. I thought people listened only because they were too shy to speak or did not know the answer. But now I know that a loving silence often has far more power to heal than the kindest words
What does the author value most in the communication with each other()

8、If you hand a handkerchief to someone crying, you may ______()
A.hurt his feelings

D.it is easy to form the habit of listening silently
10、Which of the following might be the author’s opinion about communication()
A.Keep silent
B.Just listen
C.Be careful
D.Tell your own story

16、Many things about language are a mystery, and many will always remain so. But some things we do know.
First, we know that all men in the world have a language of some sort. There is no race of men anywhere on earth so backward that it has no language. And, in historical times, there has never been a race of men without a language.
Second, there is no such thing as a primitive language. There are many people whose cultures are undeveloped, who are, as we say, uncivilized, but the languages they speak are not primitive. In all known languages we can see complexities that must have been tens of thousands of years in developing. This has not always been well understood; indeed, the direct contrary has often been stated. Popular ideas of the language of the American Indians will illustrate. Many people have supposed that the Indians communicated in a very primitive way. Study has proved this to be nonsense. There are, or were, hundreds of American Indian languages, and all of them turn out to be very complicated and very old. They are certainly different from the languages that most of us are familiar with, but they are no more primitive than English and Greek.
A third thing we know about language is that all languages are perfectly adequate. That is, each one is a perfect means of expressing the culture of the people who speak the language.
Finally, we know that language changes. It is natural and normal for language to change; the only languages which do not change are the dead ones. This is easy to understand if we look backward in time. Change goes on in all aspects of language. Grammatical features change as do speech sounds, and changes in vocabulary are sometimes very extensive and may occur very rapidly. Vocabulary is the least stable part of any language
What can be inferred from the second paragraph()
A.Some backward race of men doesn’t have a language of their own
B.Some race of men in history didn’t possess a language of their own
C.Any human race, whether backward or not, has a language
D.Some race of men on earth can communicate without language
